If Gordon Webster & Friends’ rendition of “On Revival Day” doesn’t give you chills, the volume isn’t up high enough. The band’s final number at Montreal Swing Riot 2016 brought the dancers to the front of the stage, completely filling the floor with jazz enthusiasts of all ages, colors and creeds. Watching Gordon Webster’s fingers fly across the keyboard reminds me that as a global swing community, we owe a lot to musicians. Think about it: they are the lifeblood of our festivals. Their creative work on stage directly affects what we create on the floor. Check out this video, tap your toes along with Charles Turner, air drum with Josh Davis as he lays down those sweet beats, and if you don’t already, make sure you appreciate the musicians in your life. Always tip the band, and if you meet a musician during a band break on the floor, thank them for what they do.
